Re: Testing NadaNet adapters

I've wired up a couple of NadaNet adapters, and now want to test
them. After an initial failure to get anything going, I actually
*read* through Michael's web pages and found I was violating two
rules: I was using a Platinum IIe and a TW-accelerated IIgs. After
modifying the Platinum by clipping out C95 and slowing the IIgs down
to 1MHz, I started testing software anew.

So, my problem seems to be that my NadaNet adapters aren't talking to
one another. I'm using the NPRO062905.SDK boot disk in both cases,
and have tried NADA.PONG and FUNC.TEST, alternating who is serving and
who is running the test program. Neither has gone anywhere (FUNC.TEST
doesn't find a server on the net, and NADA.PONG errors out after the
timeout because it doesn't find the companion).

I must have a problem with my adapter(s) or my wiring. More
investigation awaits. One problem I seem to have is that my machined
DIP sockets bounce right back out of the game adapter really easily;
they don't seat firmly at all.

One question I have, though: the Pong page (http://members.aol.com/
MJMahon/NadaPong.html) seems to suggest that I'd be prompted for a
machine ID: "... boot the ProDOS NadaNet boot disk ... when asked for
the machine ID,..." but I never get that prompt when booting from
NPRO062905.SDK. Should I? Or is that an indication that my cabling
is bad?

No, that was my error. ;-)

I inadvertently included the "master" version of the STARTUP program
on that image (which sets ID=1) instead of the general version which
asks what ID you would like.

I have corrected the image on the web--it now contains *both* versions
of the STARTUP program: STARTUP and STARTUP.MASTER.

Sorry for the confusion.

Id does sound like you have a wiring error in at least one of your
adapters, assuming that they are making good contact with the
game port socket. (BTW, you did notice that the IIgs game port
is *backwards* from all other Apple II game ports, right? The
cable should come out on the *front* side of the IIgs, but on
the *back* side of all other Apple II's.)

Also--did you receive my email response sent last night?
