IIRC, there are a couple but I can only remember the name of one. Morgan Davis 
has a set of add-on modules for Applesoft. One of these modules is ModemWorks. 
http://www.morgandavis.net/portfolio/mdg/ ISTR Nibble magazine had an article 
on this subject. Other languages offered varying support for comm/serial I/O.

I have not researched this but the (recently reclassified as freeware) 
BASIC.SYSTEM replacement MicroDot might have this functionality as well.
