This is such a disappointment. After putting in all that time to get
my ][+ nice and clean and looking new, and having spent hours
disassembling and reassembling the keyboard to get it working just
right, it dies on me, mostly dead anyway. At least I got a few days of
fun with it after I cleaned it up.
Anyway, yesterday afternoon I trekked down to the basement to align
and calibrate my Disk ][s. I turned on the lights, shut off the
dehumidifier (its so loud!) and booted up the ][+. At first I freaked
out because I wasn't getting any video, then I noticed that the
Monitor ][ was just turned off, so I sighed a sigh of relief and
turned it on. And then I started to freak out. I was greeted with a
very icky looking screen, instead of the normal APPLE ][ with the
little ] prompt, I got this:

If you look closely, you can see APPLE ][ at the top, and a little ]
to the top left. Also, I can clearly see a blinking cursor, and if I
type, I can see text. Also, I can boot from disks and run BASIC
programs like I ever would, except for the fact that there is a giant
mass of green waves constantly flying around the screen. If I
constantly toggle the power switch or hit the reset button over and
over, I can get some other results. Sometimes I can even get a clean
screen, with just a few artifacts floating around.
As to what caused this, I have no idea. The day before it I was using
it and it was working perfectly, I was even able to play with ADTPro
and use its audio feature to get programs on it I wouldn't have
otherwise gotten on it. When I was done with it, I turned it off and
unplugged it like I always do. The basement it is in is *not* a humid
basement; there is a dehumidifier that runs almost 24/7 to keep it
nice and dry down there, its also never excessively hot, usually under
70F. I've stuck my head in the case and sniffed around, doesn't smell
at all like something overheated or blew up (I know what hot chips
smell like), and when its running none of the chips heat to extreme
temperatures instantly
As far as I can tell, the ][+ did it on its own, and hopefully, I can
fix it myself. I am very skilled with a soldering iron and a multi
meter, and if necessary I can get access to an oscilloscope and a
waveform generator and logic probe. If this were an //e or something I
know that I could fairly easily get replacement chips for it, but as
far as I know parts for ][+s are hard to come by, so hopefully this
isn't the end for this Apple.
Thanks in advance,
John
