Funny, the original link was clickable in my newsreader as well as this
second one.

This is kind of like the issue of getting a URL to display on a single
line.  It all depends upon the newsreader used to post the original
message and the newsreader of the person reading it.  Many URLs that are
split over multiple lines I'm sure are the result of the newsreader that
posted the message doing a bad job of formatting the text to do word
wrapping at a certain character position.  Why a newsreader would cut a
"word" (URL in this case) in the middle when there is no white space, I
don't understand.  Just send that one "word" followed by an end of line
character and then start formatting the next line with the next word.

I don't use Firefox for reading newsgroups, I've only used it for
browsing web sites, so I kind of assumed it would always allow for
clickable links.  :-)
