Then what was it doing in this newsgroup? Fair assumption - 6502
emulator in Apple II newsgroup = probably an Apple II emulator. (I
didn't read the first part of the thread.)

On further reflection, it isn't $FE and $FF in an Apple II either, the
random number increment is somewhere around $3E and $3F.
