Laser 128 External Floppy Drive Problem

I just recently bought a Laser 128 and a Laser 128 external 5.25" disk
drive at Value Village.  The 128 itself works perfectly.  However, the
external drive is giving me some problems.  Specifically, it chokes on
DOS 3.3 disks and attempting to format a DOS 3.3 disk with it gives an
IO error.  I tested this with a disk known to be good (IOW, it formatted
fine in the 128's internal drive.)

The odd thing is, I can read ProDOS disks fine in the external (haven't
tried formatting a ProDOS disk in it yet, since that requires digging
deep in the closet or out in the shed to find the rest of my Apple
disks, among which should be some that have ProDOS system tools).

So anyway, is there most likely an actual problem with this drive, or is
the 128's external drive simply not compatible with DOS 3.3?
