yes. several years back, i was in a value village when a truck came in
with 75-80 beautiful conditioned apple iie platinums. all equipped with
special network cards, donated from one of the local schools. they took
them directly off the truck and heaved them straight into their compacter.
i asked the guy why they wouldn't try selling them and he said they were
not y2k-compliant and he was told to trash the works.
when i corrected him and told him apple iis don't need to be y2k-compliant
because they don't clocks, he said they're old technology and the store
doesn't really want to bother with them anymore so they were told to heave
the entire truckload. i asked why they didn't inform the school board that
they didn't want them so that school could send them elsewhere like the
salvation army, goodwill or ever overseas. he told me value village is a
private moneymaking conglomerate, not a charity although a tiny portion of
their profits go to an aligned charity. no way were they going to allow a
competitor to have access to anything even if they themselves were
planning to junk it.
being a complete pest about it, i asked him why they didn't recycle it,
he said it cost too much to screw around with recycling crap and that it
was cheaper to just crush the works and trash it.
