Re: What companies are still using old technology
May I can give input to that.
Our Lab has two test systems which are not anymore supported by the
vendor but are still used by us.
The PC's driving these test systems needs to be an old intel 386'.
we tried to swap newer pc's in but this was not working.
I guess that is the main reason why some guys still order old stuff.
The old systems works still fine and new systems cost a fortune.
So better to spend a few 100 bucks on buying old stuff rather than
spending thousands for a whole new system.
In our case we had to spend a couple of $100 to find one of the old pc's
but a new test system would have cost us $300.000. Sounds like a bargain
to me!
Some applications do not require a 2GHz Ferrari processor.
Guess why the old Z80 8-bit is still around.

Its amazing, but I have seen people order floppy disk drives, ORB Power
adaptors, and yesterday someone ordered a 500MB hard drive.
Richard since you are the DOS expert, and the expert with old technology
whom are the kinds of companies ordering these supplies? What business
are they in that relies so much on floppy disk drives (I saw one order
of like 6 floppy disk drives to one company) and who would buy a 500MB
hard drive?
Thanks,
John
PS- Richard also our terminals are using Unix. Most desk computers have
Windows 98 installed, and use some terminal emulator to access the
databases.
