Usenet is a list. Like a "bulletin board". You put things on the board, and people reply to them. If this was a real bulletin board, you wouldn't copy 10 lines (by hand, pen on paper) to reply to some 10 lines that someone else wrote.
I agree, Rich, and I often trim irrelevant parts of posts, but I'n certainly not compulsive about it.
