It's just I have a few supplies, all XT unfortunately, that were stored

I use a 5 Ohm 20W resistor for the +5v and a 10 Ohm 20W resistor for
the +12v lines to check out supplies.

is actually OK.


Those are some big resistors. What you suggest have about the same power
dissipation as a car indicator globe.

Right.  They are about 1.5cm in diameter and 5cm long, ceramic coated.

Incandescent bulbs have a temperature-dependent resistance, so they're
a little less predictable in their loading of constant-voltage power
supplies.
