I have found that you need to be pretty much directly in front of the
doors or the portals to the next level and then click button 1 on the
joystick in order for the door or portal to work.  I've been caught a
couple of times trying to get from level 1 to level 2 because I was
not lined up properly.

Since it sounds like the buttons are working on the joystick because
you can do the 180 degree turn, try approaching the door and
continuing to press forward on the joystick while you click button 1.
See if that gets the door open for you.
