Re: Timeout UltraMacros for IIe

Ken,

You have several ways to approach your problem depending on the result you
want to accomplish.

Are you just trying to select DB records containing "(", or are you writing
a macro to replace the "(" with another character?

Also, which version of AppleWorks and UltraMacros are you using? The last
version published was AppleWorks 5.1, and it contained Ultra 4 built-in, and
also contained a new TimeOut application, called TimeOut Database Replace.
AppleWorks 5.1 was a _major_ upgrade from 3.0, and is probably the best
8-bit software you'll ever see. Most people don't know about just how good
5.1 is since the Apple II market was collapsing just about the time the
program was being developed.

If your IIe has at least 256K of RAM, I'd grab a copy of AppleWorks 5.1 from
either a former user, or off the web from the usual suspects.

Ultra 4 contains a 'Dot' command called '.SubChar', which allows you to
replace one character in a string with another. I think it would accomplish
just about anything you're trying to do.

Likewise, TimeOut Database Replace will allow 'find and replace' across an
entire database (or just one category), and can be restricted to whole words
only. Unfortunately, wildcards are not supported in it.

If you are stuck using the older UltraMacros, I suppose you could use some
string manipulations (left, right, mid, etc.) and read and test the characters
one at a time. It might be fairly slow.

Various AppleWorks reference material is currently scattered about the web.
I am not aware of any electronic versions of the AppleWorks reference
manuals, though, which is a shame.

I might suggest getting copies of Will Nelken's 'Ultra to the Max' and
'Ultra AppleWorks' for a comprehensive tutorial course in UltraMacros
programming. I've seen these in several places and they should be more
readily available in the near future, (including as .pdf files) as I am
working with Will Nelken to compile a CD containing the entire 26 issue
TimeOut Central AppleWorks disk magazine. That disk magazine contained the
Nelken Series, and may be available again shortly from Will Nelken.

BTW, I recently finished compiling the 66 issue NAUG on Disk for Joe Kohn /
ShareWare Solutions II. NAUG on Disk also contained the Nelken series, as
well as the entire text of the AppleWorks Forum from 1990 - 1995. If anyone
is interested in that CD of NAUG on Disk, I would contain Joe Kohn at
ShareWare Solutions II for pricing and availability.
