Re: Apple // emulators for Linux (not GS)

Alistair Ross wrote: Hi,

I'm looking for an emulator for my modern-day system of choice (Linux). I used to use an A2 emulator years ago on linux and it worked fine, but I forget the name.
The only one available through the debian/ubuntu repositories that i can
find is xapple2. Trouble there is that it needs an 8 bit display! - It's a
bit of a hassle to change my display in x11 conf from 8 bit to 24 bit and
back again just whenever i wanna use my desktop!

Actually, this was discussed not too long ago. Sadly, nothing has changed much. The only decent/user friendly emulator is GS based, KEGS, but functions well as a IIe.

There is another X based II emulator, YAE which will work but will require some effort to get running. Alternatives exist however if you don't mind the extra software layers.

Applewin will run in most versions of WINE or Cedega. Later versions are pretty useful with the exception of mouse support.

Many DOS emulators will run in DOSBox with some loss in timing resolution. Likewise DOSEmu will run some emulators such as ApplePC decently. DOSEmu in a console and ApplePC can still give a rather authentic look.

One caveat to be aware of. Most II emulators (on the PC) do NOT handle .nib images well. Many may read them but won't write to them. This can be a problem with many game images.

IMHO, you will not find any single solution for II emulation in either GNU Linux/X or Windows operating environments.
