Yeah, I've seen this happen once. Many years ago an old game stopped
working, and when checking the disk, one sector's data was different
on every read - but only different after a particular byte.
When it happens it corrupts a lot of data (the remainder of the
sector) but at least it can make it easy to find which nibble is
causing the trouble. ;-)
