I gather that older CD players have problems with CDRs, because of
how they are constructed compared to pressed CDs.  There weren't CDRs
before a certain time, so they weren't accommodated.

Later units are specifically designed to play them.

You see it even today, where some boomboxes even specify "CDRs".
