You can see how the simple phonetic characters of katakana are fairly
easily represented with only 7x8 pixels. Note that despite this, many
Japanese would find it frustrating reading words written in this style,
which probably explains the dearth of software that used it.

Korean character combinations are too complex for an Apple II video
ROM, and Chinese characters are too numerous. Chinese has no simplified
phonetic script AFAIK.
