I've been trying to find my copy of this manual just to verify the
hack.  ;-)

And, yes, Woz did design this card and its firmware.

For several years, Woz was the go-to guy on Apple peripheral cards.
IIRC, he caused a complete redesign of the original Mouse card to
make it much simpler.  So by that time, he was consulting on rather
than actually designing some cards.
