apple II and atari controllers are just pots/switches. no active
devices..
all the conversion requires is adapting the end of the cable to the
joyport on the apple II..
Nintendo, Supernintendo, PS, etc contain active devices, usually
a X input shift register. data is read off the controller one bit at a
time,
1 bit is for up button, 1 bit for down, one bit for A button, etc...
Frank Carney has a page with info on interfacing the NES gamepad
to the apple II, although it does not give the computer the same input
as the joystick port does..
