It apparently goes back to Prohibition (an unfortunate era in American
history during which alcohol was outlawed), and is a reference to the
address of a speakeasy (a bar where you could get illegal booze (often of
dubious quality) during Prohibition) in New York City that would send its
customers out the door when they got word that the cops were coming.
