This may be my problem.. Network Pref Pane allows you to select the
modem for the Keyspan ... I set it to Null... this may (and prolly is
wrong) I assume you need to set the port to something to open it?
This is a new thing to me..I've never used a USB/Serial adaptor for OS
X even tho I've been using OS X since the first release. Always had a
older Mac around it the need arose for serial.

I'm sorry it's a DB-8 connector on the keyspan... not 9 ... it also has
2 ports if that matters.

I'm assuming it's a straight thru connection... when I use the same
cable on the G3 (with built-in DB-8 modem port) it works like a charm
w/ MacADT 1.2.1. I'm not sure it's a Null modem cable tho and if that
is required I guess I need to do some research on how to make that with
the connectors needed. :(

Is it the tty or cu that is used tho?
I actually have another I could prolly send you if you need .. let me
know.
