Re: Mac Floppies / Prodos

I'm testing with both a PowerMac 6500 and a beige desktop G3. They
behave identically and both are running OS8.5.1. Both machines are
spotlessly clean with no bad hardware.. even the drives have no dust in
them. The 6500 is using a Panasonic floppy; the G3 a Matsushitsa or
whatever. I see what you mean by them appearing as cheaper PC-like
drives compared with the earlier, better-made Sonys.

I also have a Color Classic I've upgraded to an 040 w/ IIe card, and
running OS 7.5.3. This machine has no troubles at all recreating the
GSOS image disks. However, of all the Macs I have, I suspect this one
will have the shortest life due to the built-in screen (and no external
video)... so I don't want to rely on it for GSOS master re-creation.

The IIgs has a hard drive.

What I'm trying to do is archive copies of my original GSOS diskettes
so that I can recreate if a situation arises years from now where I
lose its hard drive, AND then find that my original GSOS floppies are
no longer readable. One redundant system is never enough for me.. ;-)
The DiskCopy 4.2 images are nice for this situation because the Mac
can do the generating.

A highly inefficient compromise I came up with last night was to use
Shrinkit to disk image all the GSOS floppies; then I shuttled these
images off to the Mac. In a failure situation, I would have to still
have a working 040 to write these .shk files to diskette (either via
IIe card or by copying them back to GS then unshrinking there).

The best option is to have the PPC be able to recreate masters, then
once the IIgs is booting up again, it can establish an Appletalk
connection to the PPC for the rest of file restoring.
