The first time I attempted a monitor repair job I made myself a jumper
lead with a nice beefy wire wound resistor for just these things, until
I got confident and stopped doing it for 'relatively safe' inspections.
After the third 'accident' I have finally trained myself to discharge
the HT habitually :-)
I concur with Micheals assessment that it's relatively harmless. I will
say though that the 'shock' is not *that* bad, but the 'fright'
certainly is, and there is probably a bigger risk of cardiac arrest
from the fright than there is from the shock. For me, the embarrassment
felt afterward is far more painful than the shock ;-)
I've built some interesting audio equipment in my time too - one
particular amplifier that has 40,000uF of filter capacitors on it's
supply rails that I very thoroughly discharge after lifting the lid. To
me, the filters on the secondaries of power supplies are a *lot*
scarier than the HT of a CRT.
