It may be a bit premature, but it sounds like you should investigate
the video eeprom or anything connected to it on the board (damaged
socket?  Dead bug crawled under it on the under-side of the board?)
This chip stores the character bitmaps.  If graphics modes seem to work
then I would definately be willing to bet that's the case.

If you want a quick test of lo-res, you can try typing this at what
should be the basic prompt:

GR:VTAB 1

and then press return a bunch. You should see a solid yellow box where
the cursor should be and gray lines drawn across the screen each time
you press return.
