In the beginning there was no disk operating system. Everbody used
casette tape. This situation existed from 1977 to mid-1978.
Then Apple released the Disk ][ external 5.25" drive and DOS. This
original DOS ran from version 3.1 to 3.3 and existed from 1978 through
1983.
In 1984 Apple released ProDOS as a replacement for the old DOS. ProDOS
was basically a trimmed down version of SOS, the Apple /// disk
operating system.
When Apple released the Apple IIgs in 1986, they also put out a 16 bit
version of ProDOS for it. They called it ProDOS 16 while renaming the
8-bit ProDOS, ProDOS 8.
So ProDOS 8 had versions 1.0 through 1.1.1 (as ProDOS) and version 1.2
through 2.0.3 (as ProDOS 8).
Confused? :)
