It was a failure. Though //e clones seem to be outnumbered by ][+ - not
everyone could make the chips, but that didn't stop the vendor from
"running the factory at night" and dispatching from the back door
instead of the front door, so to say.

The clone MMU and IOUs usually have a five digit # on them.
The five digit # is the engineering # of the chip from the vendor when
it was in the design phase for Apple, and that was here in the US.
