Why use VIA in Mockingboard?

Here is a question to anyone who programmed a Mockingboard:
why were 6522 (VIA) chips used in the design? VIA is normally used to
add bidirectional ports to a microprocessor, but the sound chip itself
(AY-3-8910)
added 2 ports. And certainly didn't need a VIA to be interfaced from an
Apple 2
slot. VIA also has a timer (if not 2). Was it used for anything musical?
