I finally had a chance to dig out and examine an Apple ][ given to me
several years back. Turns out to have serial #1478 on motherboard,
#1195 on the chassis. Bus connectors are green with projecting mounting
ears. Support chips are all dated '77 (with autostart ROMs installed
and some newer memory chips). The power supply has a mini toggle switch
instead of the more familiar rocker. The keyboard is a single PC board
(no decoder card) with "November 11, 1977" stamped on the bottom. And,
yes, it works. On power-up, it displays "garbage" on screen. If I hit
reset, it emits a "beep" and announces "Apple ][" with a ']' prompt.
It was given to me with a January, 1978 "Red book" and November, 1977
Applesoft Reference (Blue book).
The unit is absolutely mint, with no chips or scrapes and, best of all,
no case yellowing!
This is by far the oldest Apple ][ I've ever laid eyes on and am curious
as to what others have to say about its pedigree and potential
collectors value.
