BUt the notion of "plug and play" came before those.  It means that
if you plug it in, you don't need to fuss over anything.  The Apple's
design allows for that ROM on each board, so if anything did need
to be configured it could be.

I would never consider the ability to plug in while powered up part
of "plug and play".
