Having designed a board for the Apple II back in 1998, I seem to recall
that the price of getting boards manufactured had a high initial setup
fee.  So making 1 printed circuit board cost $250 but making 10 was
$300 (i.e. $30 per board) and larger quantities could have pushed that
down to $10 per board or less.  Parts for the boards were not quite as
bad in small quantities but I did get a significant discount if I
ordered many of the same part at once.  Perhaps the C64 community is
larger and can support better production quantities.
