Now, what about C64/128? It has 40x25 lines so it looks like

The C64's VIC-II chip has 8x8 text at 320x200 resolution. 640x200 would
imply 80-column text. The Apple II, however, used discreet logic chips to
generate it's video(the IBM CGA cards were designed much the same way. In
fact, when used with a composite monitor, the CGA color palette is almost
identical to the Apple's color palette) The Apple also only generates a
composite signal. The C64, OTOH, also produces S-video.
