All Disk II controllers should work fine in a IIgs of any ROM revision.
Certainly it shouldn't cause any hardware damage.  Possibly the card
was not seated correctly in the socket?

The other possibility is that if the card had not been used for a very
long time, the oxide layer of the electrolytic capacitor C2 (22 uF 16V)
had degraded.  If so, the capacitor would definitely be destroyed when
powered up.  Check whether there are any signs of damage to it.  Usually
they have stamped or scribed lines on one end so that it will burst in a
controlled way in an overpressure condition, rather than violently
exploding.  If it looks like it's no longer sealed, or if there is
evidence of electrolyte leaking out, it definitely needs to be replaced.
