which was the first language I came across with this feature.

I wonder if there is a connection with SASL, the applicative language
invented by David Turner of St. Andrews, and my first exposure to
the offside rule.  SASL is quite LISP-like in the density of braketing,
but actual brackets are almost totally obviated by the off-side rule.
