Mine did for a long time after the filter caps exploded in the PSU. I'd only just bought it too! My first and only Apple II (it's a non-enhanced IIe).

It might even still smell too, I haven't checked it in a while. My current computer of choice is the Amstrad PCW and I've not got the space to have them all set up at once.

Applying full voltage to an electrolytic that has been uncharged for a
long time can cause it to explode just like exceeding its rated voltage
can (in fact, due to de-forming, that's *exactly* what is happening).

Capacitors differ widely in their tolerance for idleness, and you appear
to have been unlucky.

Fortunately, they are inexpensive and easy to replace, particularly
since modern capacitors are physically smaller.  Be sure to use the
same or higher voltage and capacitance ratings, and use high-temperature
capacitors if possible (to extend their life).
