I gave up... I gave up trying to get 8-bit characters to read properly. The ctrl-A Z option didn't work for me. So, I decided to wrap the packets in plain 7-bit ASCII. This makes the packets twice the size they were before but that's ok and it is working just fine. Now I can do what I wanted to do in the first place. Thanks again for the help, glad to see some discussion was generated.
Ron, since you're in Forth, why not just write words to read a character directly from the 6551? It's only a few instructions, and all your problems will be gone. If you know what you want to do, don't let the firmware touch anything after you've used it to initialize the port--if that. -michael Music synthesis for 8-bit Apple II's!
