Ack! I just noticed the wide crossposting on this!! I've limited
my reply to csa2.

.."Of course" this price/supply situation,
and their still relatively wide support, won't last forever (e.g. on
http://www.floppydisk.com/buy.htm note that the LOW DENSITY DS/DD
diskettes are *more* expensive than the HIGH DENSITY DS/HD
diskettes).

Why is that?

Low volume means you have to pay the warehouse rent and/or the few
remaining reluctant manufacturers.

o Various colors and such are handy - for a small set of
(semi-)frequently used floppies, one can remember what's generally
on what, without even bothering to (re)label the diskettes.

I probably also still have several hundred 5.25" floppies, but I use
those relatively rarely these days. I have some 8" floppies, but
alas, I've never had, and don't yet have an 8" floppy drive, ... so I
don't have too much use for those ... at least yet.

I believe I have 6-8 5.25 inch floppies. I do not believe there is a way to open the disks on a modern PC or Mac. Or is there?

If you have a PC, you can always attach a 5.25" floppy drive. The
cables and connectors are still there. ;-)

I know OSX cant read ProDOS, and I doubt XP can.

XP can read ProDOS disks fine if you have CiderPress--an amazingly
versatile shareware program (Google it for details).
