The cool thing about Quartus (Altera's Software) is that you can
specify 74xx series logic in their schematic layout tool, thus
circumventing HDL completely if you'd like.  They also offer AHDL, an
easier to learn HDL.  Rich Dryher used it for the CFFA logic.  The
downside is that you're tied to Altera components... not such a huge
downside IMHO, unless you're producing stuff in the thousands and price
point is a major concern.  Even then, its not like Altera isn't
competetive.

As far as books, there are some that Altera recommends on their
website, maybe Xilinx offers recomendations too?  If there is a
specific HDL that you'd like to learn, maybe search Amazon under
Verilog, VHDL, etc.
