Never heard of either, but your problem sounds like a classic case of 
"stiction" to me.

The "old time" remedy:

Power it up, and give it a couple sharp raps on the side of the platter 
housing with the *HANDLE* end of a hammer - Raps with the handle, not 
bashes with the head - You're trying to jar the heads unstuck, not punch 
a hole in the housing. I've found that *USUALLY*, a "front to back" rap 
works better than "side to side", but that isn't any sort of 
carved-in-stone rule.
