In that particular case, the "magic numbers" was at the end of each source
line: Integer Basic ended its lines with a $01, while an S-C Assembler source
file ended its lines with a $00.  If you encountered an "INT" file which
appeared to contain garbage, it was probably an Integer Basic file with
embedded machine code -- such files were quite common in the early days
of the Apple II.

I've never dived into the storage format of LISA source files - perhaps you
could give a brief summary in how they differed from Integer Basic files
and S-C Assembler source files?
