What about a read-enable switch?  That would make it totaly safe from
accidentally reading stuff you didn't want to.

Seriously though, a disable switch would be keen.  That sucker is loud.
 Seems that hooking a variable resister in series wouldn't be all that
hard though.  Variable resistor + knob + headphone jack + scrap wires
is all readily obtained from Fry's -- getting an echo or other card
would be too much trouble and waiting, etc.  (but still not a bad idea
if I didn't already have a vintage mockingboard-c)
