For DOS 3.3 to work out-of-the-box you'd have to actually emulate the disk ][ interface on the CFFA.

As an example, for my TRS-80 FPGA implementation I emulated the register interface of the WD1793 disk controller which actually talked to a SPI flash chip which held 2 TRS-80 floppy disk images. I could boot NEWDOS/80 directly from the 'floppy' images in SPI flash.
