This is what I thought too... but I really couldn't get ADT to work,
until...

I poked around in the Windows Control Panel and found something
interesting -- if you go into System/Hardware/Device Manager and get
properties on COM1 there's a tab called "Port Settings."

I changed the settings to 19200/8/NoParity/1 Stop Bit/Xon-Xoff, restarted
(just for good measure, may not be required), and voila -- ADT worked! Who
knew!
