IIGS/IIe and Netatalk

I'm in the process of getting a IIGS (ROM1) and a IIe Platinum with a Workstation Card talking to a Linux server running Netatalk (2.0.3), through an AsanteTalk converter. At this point, I can boot the IIGS (System 6.0.1) from a 3.5" disk and mount shares from Netatalk. I'm using Marsha Jackson's patched APPLESHARE CDEV. However, I am unable to boot the IIGS from Appletalk. I have the Apple II Setup Disk (v3.0) files copied into the a2boot directory on the Netatalk server, and the IIGS finds the proper boot image and the chooser comes up. I can pick the server, and select Registered User. After entering the user name and password, I get an "Unknown network error, contact the system administrator" message. Same thing happens on the IIe.

I was initially unable to authenticate when booting from Appletalk. I discovered that the password was being sent REVERSED to the Netatalk server, and patched the uams_pam.c module to deal with either situation. What I may be missing is the correct layout of the system directories for booting in Netatlk.

I know this was discussed a couple of years ago, but I never saw a definitive solution to booting from Netatalk. Yes, I've read Jonathon Reed's IIGS Remote Boot document. Does anyone have this working with a recent version of Netatalk?
