The "e" in Apple IIe does in fact stand for enhanced; enhanced in
relation to the Apple II+, which is plused in relation to the II which
is apparently just two Apple 1's crammed together.  The "enhanced" IIe
was actually slated to be the Apple IIee however they ran out of "e's"
at the factory and instead had to make due with little stickers next to
the power light.  This no doubt will be clarified in Steven Weyhrich's
next revision of the Apple II History.  You'll seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
