Last I checked, there's not a lot of good support on the apple //
series computers to download anything from a website (sure there's
basic mosaic-like browsers out there for the //gs, but nothing for web
services per se)

You might want to upgrade to a newer technology platform that's
supported by Java and try using some various stuff put out by the
apache jakarta team.  Last I checked, they have no plans to back-port
any of their solutions to the Apple // platform, so I'm afraid you're
probably out of luck.
