Build your own Linux box and you can use pine and whatever other
"old-school" apps you want.

(I thought pine was a mail reader, though, not a news reader.)

I use trn to read news, logged into my web/mail server from anywhere (even
from my cellphone...pssh is a decent ssh client for Palm OS).  For service,
I'm using NewsHosting:

$10 per month gets you 10 GB per month, with current retention (how long
they keep old posts) running an average of 160 days for text newsgroups such
as this and 35 days for binary newsgroups.  If there's something they don't
carry that you know exists, they'll add it pretty quickly (they started
carrying alt.video.ptv.mythtv a day or two after I asked for it).
