I've had some experience converting formatted text files to Merlin.

First, eliminate redundant spaces by iteratively replacing pairs of
spaces with a single space. When no pairs are found, you're done.
(This can be done either in a text editor or in Merlin's editor.)

Careful not to eliminate any spaces in character strings used to keep
text formatted into columns!

Good point. Comment fields are certainly an issue, as are
lines with missing opcodes, or opcodes with no operand but
a comment...

Avoiding this is difficult using text editor replacement rules.
(Emacs, on the other hand, would eat this up! ;-)

When I have done this, it was usually with less than 200 lines
of assembly code, and it wasn't much trouble to scan through and
fix the exceptions manually, but for a large program, an automatic
approach is called for.

If I had a lot to do, I'd cobble together an Applesoft program
to remove the redundant spaces.
