Re: 74xx symbols from Xilinx ISE?
Unfortunately every manufacturer has their own proprietary standard and
they like it that way. Designs are only portable if you learn Verilog
or VHDL which can be a royal pain in the ass if you're just doing this
stuff on a part time basis. Altera has an easier HDL called AHDL, but
once again, you're locked into Altera. Same with schematic entry,
you're locked in with that specific manufacturer, however you might be
able to compile an Altera shematic to Verilog or VHDL and then port it
that way. Also, Altera has some FPGA's that are very comparable to the
Spartan product line and also has some very impressive CPLD offerings
(which eliminate the need for a serial eprom loader).
If ISE is being a pain, then definately look into Quartus II (free
download) from Altera. Its easier for both schematic entry and
simulation.
I have intentions of doing something similar to what you're doing down
the road, but cant commit any time until April. I can lend a hand
then, but I'd prefer not to use Xilinx.
