I just purchased an 8-bit Baby, and, though it was clearly stated
that the programmable chip was not included, I was surprised to find
that no other parts (except a surface mount 3.3v regulator) were
included--it's just a bare board plus a 3.3v regulator. I expected
the socket, regulator, decoupling caps, JTAG connector, etc., to be
on the board--or at least in the kit.

These components are much cheaper when purchased in quantity, and
it would have made great sense to include them--perhaps for an
additional couple of dollars.

It's a fine quality prototyping board, but several pickle slices
short of a sandwich.

My sentiments exactly. I "expected" the basic infrastructure to be included. If the asking price wouldn't cover that, I'd have preferred to spend a wee bit more to get everything. Now, I have to wait until I get a reasonable order together for Digi-Key before being able to build them up.
