I don't think that these machines are cheap enough for home use but there are newer scanners which are constructed to better scan books - no need to cut something, anymore. If my old and trusty ScanJet 5p ever dies I'll probably get one of these. But don't count on it, the HP is a gnarly old fellow (7 years and counting). bye Marcus
