I think doing FTP from the apple via the PC is a fine avenue to explore.
For me, my intent, like yours was to do PC <->Apple file transfers.
I found hyperterm via null modem cable to ProTerm served me well and I
searched no further. I used ProTerm 2.x briefly but all PC experience was
with 3.x
